Brief #1 Pixel Art Concept

Today I created my first ever pixel character!

I'm quite excited to share this, as I was hiding from this art for a long time. I don't know exactly why. Maybe I didn't like it, or perhaps I was just scared to try it out.

Well, anyways. For my art specialisation, we have about 30 tasks to try out (including Graphic Design, 2D and 3D Art), but I decided to start with pixels. Maybe one part of me was sure it's going to be very quick and easy (Yes. I was wrong).

I started with some small research. I looked a couple of videos on YouTube and went for inspiration on Pinterest.

After I started to sketch out the future character. After a couple of tries and many unfinished pictures, I came to this:

I am still not sure who is this creature, but I liked him, and I loved the idea of the bird/horse head together with a humanoid body.

After I went to the website piskelapp.com, which appeared to be very easy to use web software. As I said before, it was my first attempt to create pixel art, and I was able to understand how it works pretty fast.

I used in total four primary colours (white, black, red, green) with different shades to create a volume to the picture. In total, I used 12 different colour shades.

To gain some bonus points for the brief, you should create an animated art or create an alter ego of this character. I couldn't decide and went up for option three: animated alter-ego.

I might call the animation the hardest part of all the process. You cannot just rotate drawn elements. You HAVE to redraw them pixel by pixel.

After hours of tries and mistakes, I finished with this:

(So now we know who is this character. Not a lovely big-eyed pony)

This animation consists out from 18 frames in total.

I loved this art. It looks very basic, but it is quite a challenge to work with it. This experience was enjoyable, and I would try to create more of that in the future.
